Summary from Goodreads:

More than two hundred years into the future, human beings are an endangered species. The planet has been battered by war, its inhabitants plagued by disease and death. Few humans survived and remained unaffected. Most changed dramatically and evolved into something else entirely. Irrevocable alterations caused by chemical warfare have created a new species. North America is in ruins and has been overtaken. Humanity has fallen at the hands of mutants known as Urthmen.
Seventeen year-old Avery is alive and unchanged. But she has not been immune to the harshness of the new world. She has lived on the run for much of her life, in terror.
After losing her father, Avery is the sole guardian of her eight-year-old sister, June. Avery is now charged with June’s safety as well as her own, a nearly impossible task.
Forced to hide deep in the forest and away from the cities overrun by Urthmen, Avery and her sister are constantly hunted. Danger awaits them at every turn. They fear they are the only human beings left, that they are the last of their kind.
But are they truly alone?

My Review:

I found this one for free on Amazon last year and decided to try it for one of my December reads even though it took me longer than I thought it would. I thought that the idea of this book was an interesting idea but I also thought that it could have definitely been better. This story starts out with 17 year old Avery taking care of her younger sister June in the middle of a forest and making sure thy are safe from various creatures. Apparently the main creatures we hear about are Urthman and Lurkers, although we hear more about Lurkers than we do the Urthman. I really liked that Avery was a strong character but there were a couple of things that I didn’t really like about the story. The first thing was that the characters really liked to use the word “Oh my Gosh” a lot whenever something bad happened, which was pretty frequent. It didn’t really bother me that much at first but when the other characters came in and started saying it too, it did get a little annoying. Another thing that I noticed about the novel was that even though we seem to hear more about the Urthman in the story, the plot seems to focus more on the Lurkers that come out at night than the Urthman.  Maybe we find out more throughout the series but this first one seems to focus more on finding out that there were other people besides the main characters and the Lurkers. Right now I am not sure if I would continue the series or not but if I can get the second book I would definitely read it see how the story progresses. While I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I thought  I would still recommend it if you are looking for a Science Fiction – Dystopia novel.
